On June 12, the Legislature reconvened for one day to consider overriding the governor’s veto of House Enrolled Act 1546. This was the first time the Legislature had held a Technical Corrections Day since legislation was passed in 1995 allowing for the General Assembly to address technical corrections and vetoes. Given the special circumstances of deliberating such an action, both [...]

Commentary by John V. Accetturo One has to wonder what has happened to truth. In years past, the truth took No. 1 position in determining the integrity and honor of a person. Some would say that lying can do more damage to its victims than physical violence. It definitely seems that lying has become the norm in our society, especially [...]

Is Hillary Clinton going to run for president? We earnestly believe that she will, and she purposely left her job as secretary of state to do a couple things on the road to victory. First, she’ll take on a little bit of plastic surgery. Now, we want to be clear here: This neither is a criticism, nor should that comment [...]

We’ve reached another of the year’s milestones – June, the month where mowing the lawn changes from a pleasant springtime chore into an onerous summer task. Where, I ask, is it written that we are all supposed to live on well-manicured lawns? Who decreed that our yards should look like fairways? Since when did the length and density of bluegrass [...]

Ah, young love. And when I say “young,” I mean “middle school.” We’ve had a year full of said love in our household. Let’s start with my soon-to-be freshman, heretofore known as Doolittle. [This alias is hilariously clever see, because I refer to my husband as Doo. So laugh!] We actually had no idea Doolittle had a girlfriend (his first) [...]

Among the many choices required in life (coffee or tea; boxers or briefs; White Sox or Cubs) add to the list of those which help us define ourselves (and be defined by others) is the question at the gate before departing on an airline whether one wishes to be seated on the aisle or at a window. It is, like [...]

It is our position that parents and caregivers should be aware of water safety. Scores of families will be looking for relief in area pools and lakes this summer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fatal drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children age 1 to 14 years. Drowning may not always look [...]

It’s highly interesting and maybe a bit frightening to hear President Barack Obama’s administration suggest that the horrific and deadly attack eight months ago in Benghazi “was a long time ago” and that the Internal Revenue Service probes of conservative political-interest groups were the travails of a few “rogues.” Neither was on point. Late last month there was a vehement [...]

It is our position that underutilized volunteerism, resources and talent should be shifted to the organizations that need it most. Often times, there is an overabundance of volunteers at schools or organizations who, in actuality, need them the least. Low volunteer turnover can easily put the squeeze on available opportunities. PTO monopolies and tiresome politics can downright suck the enthusiasm [...]

In the world of everyday interactions, there are certain phrases and gestures that we all use as indicators of greeting, transition from one point to another, of hierarchy and of civility. They can be as simple as hello or as subtle as shifting one’s eyes away when it is time for a subject or conversation to end. But somehow, and [...]
